Improved Particle Filtering for Pseudo-Uniform Belief Distributions in Robot Localisation

چکیده
Self-localisation, or the process of an autonomous agent determining its own position and orientation within some local environment, is a critical task in modern robotics. Although this task may be formally defined as a simple transformation between local and global coordinate systems, the process of accurately and efficiently determining this transformation is a complex task. This is particularly the case in an environment where localisation must be inferred entirely from noisy visual data, such as the RoboCup robot soccer competitions. Although many effective probabilistic filters exist for solving this task in its general form, pseudo-uniform belief distributions (such as those arising from course-grain observations) exhibit properties allowing for further performance improvement. This paper explores the RoboCup 2D Simulation League as one such scenario, approximating the artificially constrained noise models as uniform to derive an improved particle filter for selflocalisation. The developed system is demonstrated to yield from 38.2 to 201.3% improvement in localisation performance, which is further shown as corresponding with a 6.4% improvement in goal difference across approximately 750 games.

An Evaluation of the Sequential Monte Carlo Technique for Simultaneous Localisation and Map-building
Simultaneous Localisation and Map-building (SLAM) can be considered as a combined state and parameter estimation problem. Instead of using Extended Kalman Filtering, the more flexible Sequential Monte Carlo method is considered. Multiple Generic Particle Filters are initialised to estimate the robot and obstacle positions concurrently. Simulation results based on a simple robot environment, whi...

This paper presents designing an optimal adaptive controller for tracking control of robot manipulators based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. PSO algorithm has been employed to optimize parameters of the controller and hence to minimize the integral square of errors (ISE) as a performance criteria. In this paper, an improved PSO using logic is proposed to increase the convergenc...

Monte Carlo Localisation has been applied to solve many different classes of localisation problems. In this paper, we present a possible Simultaneous Localisation and Map-building implementation using the Sequential Monte Carlo technique. Multiple particle filters are created to estimate both the robot and landmark positions simultaneously. The proposed technique shows promising results when co...
متن کاملAn Improved Real-Time Particle Filter for Robot Localization
Robot localization is the problem of estimating robot coordinates with respect to an external reference frame. In the common formulation of the localization problem, the robot is given a map of its environment, and to localize itself relative to this map it needs to consult its sensor data. The effectiveness of a solution to the localization problem in an unstructured environment strongly depen...
متن کاملAdaptive Sensing for Localisation of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle
This paper demonstrates an improved robot localisation approach based on adaptive sensing. Using a particle filter to represent the uncertainty in location the approach minimises the expected entropy after the next robot action. It is demonstrated in simulation that this approach is useful in sensor management of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle when a digitised elevation map of the environment...
